Frequently Asked Questions
GENERAL
Q: What typical weather patterns and temperatures can we expect?
A: The weather is coastal which means rain can be likely during your stay so
pack accordingly although we do experience many days of sunshine. Temperatures
are typically in the 50’s and 60’s and sudden changes, including winds, are
common. Bring layered clothing.
Q: Are there restrictions on the amount of baggage to bring?
A: Because you will be transported to the lodge in small aircraft, we ask that
you limit your gear to 50#. If this is difficult for you for any reason, call us
and we can make other arrangements, such as mailing gear to us ahead of time. There may be extra charges if excessive gear results in additional plane trips or additional baggage charges from our charter carriers.
Q: If we want to ship gear to you ahead of time, where do we send it, and
when?
A: Gear (please insure it) can be sent to our address in Soldotna which is PO
Box 3234 Soldotna, Alaska 99669. Send it no sooner than 30 days prior to your
scheduled arrival.
Q: How much walking will we be doing?
A: We are equipped to transport people in the field who have difficulty walking
long distances. This includes the use of ATV’s with comfortable trailers that
will transport you in the field for bear viewing, photography, and fishing.
Guests who prefer to walk can always utilize that option.
Q: Will we be transported by boat during our stay?
A: There are key destinations from the lodge that we visit with our charter
vessels, operated by coast guard licensed captains. This includes the bird
sanctuaries (puffins & other sea-birds) and fossil beds. While these trips are
optional, the charter boat is necessary for halibut fishing and access to the
tent site. We have a 100% safety record in 22 years of operation.
Q: How bad are the insects?
A: There are annoying insects throughout all Alaska but they are easily managed
by a combination of insect repellent, headnets, or simply ignoring them.
Mosquitos are more common in early summer while no-see-ums and “white sox”
(small gnats) more common later in the summer. We have a good supply of
repellents but you are encouraged to bring your own.
Q: What about dietary concerns?
A: Our kitchen staff is very sensitive to any special needs you may have with
regards to meals. Simply let us know ahead of time (preferably when you book)
and again when you arrive at the lodge and we will happily accommodate your
requests.
Q: Are boots necessary at Silver Salmon?
A: Yes. If you plan on fishing or partaking in any boat activities, hip boots or
chest waders are necessary. If you are joining us for local bear viewing, (same
day or overnight), then knee boots will suffice. We have a large supply of knee
boots on hand unless your foot size is 14 or larger.
Q: Are there incidental costs that we may incur?
A: There is a $6 a day per person park service user fee (even if you hold a
national park pass) and a small sales tax due with your balance. Other optional
costs are vacuum sealing fish ($1 a pound), halibut fishing ($100 for full
service guests, $125 for partial service guests), and use of lodge cell phone ($2 a
minute). Gratuities are not included in
the bill and are very much appreciated.
Q: Do cell phones work at “Silver Salmon?”
A: Yes, depending on your provider. We have had good luck with most national
plans.
Q: Can we bring our own alcohol beverages?
A: Absolutely. In the case of large amounts of beer, we may be able to purchase
that ahead of time and store it at the lodge. We occasionally serve
complimentary wine.
Q: Do we have a choice of places to depart from to reach Silver Salmon?
A: Yes. You can leave either from Soldotna, Homer, or Anchorage (3 or more).
Q: Do you have recommendations for places to stay in Soldotna, Homer and
Anchorage?
A: Yes. We have an apartment complex in Soldotna where you can stay prior to and
after your visit to Silver Salmon. Vehicle use can also be arranged. We have
motels in Anchorage, close to the airport, that we work with.
Q: What are the rooms like?
A: We offer several bedrooms in the main
lodge and the next door Iliamna house like the one pictured below and also
full-service cabins with bathrooms and showers. Most rooms have private
bathrooms.

FISHING
Q: Are fishing licenses sold at the lodge?
A: Yes. If you have time along the road system, we encourage you to purchase one
there in order to maximize your fishing time, otherwise we are happy to provide
them.
Q: What fishing equipment is available at the lodge?
A: We have medium action spinning rods/reels for rent at $5 a day. Fly patterns
that we have developed for local conditions are also for sale as well as some
spinning tackle but you are encouraged to bring your own. All gear for halibut
is provided.
Q: Can we retain some of our fish for taking home?
A: Yes. Although we encourage catch and release fishing, there is a harvestable
limit of salmon which is 2 fish per person per day. Fish are professionally
vacuum sealed and frozen for your trip home and we have waxed fish boxes
available. Halibut limit is also 2 per person per day.
Q: Is bait allowed in the streams we will fish?
A: No. Artificial lures, spinners and fly patterns are the legal methods
available.
Q: What is the ratio of guides to clients?
A: The ratio will vary, depending on group size and experience but typically is
one guide per four fishermen, with frequent occasions of one guide per two
fishermen.
PHOTOGRAPHY
Q: Can we shoot both digital and conventional methods?
A: Yes. Our photo guides are adept in both modes and will work with you in
either format. Extra batteries and film are recommended.
Q: How many photographers are taken into the field at one time?
A: Usually no more than six. For larger parties, we divide you up and frequent
two or three areas at once so as not to stress the photo subjects.
Q: Can we be assured our equipment will be adequately protected?
A: Yes. Although we operate in a salt-water environment, we take every
precaution to make sure your camera, accessories, and tripod will be safely
handled and protected.
Q: My gear totals more than 50 pounds. What should I do?
A: Call us and we can make arrangements to either have some of your gear shipped
ahead of time or make provisions on the small plane to accommodate your gear.
Q: Do you have a teaching and “hands-on” program?
A: Yes. We have a lounge room with built in screen that is great for rainy days.
Also, bring some of your own slides or disks to showcase some of your own work.
Our modern, multi-media computer system allows you to show your images, making
your own lap-top optional.
